Police in Australia announced Wednesday that they were investigating beaches for suspicious shipments containing more than 120 kilograms of cocaine that washed up over the Christmas holiday.
According to the police, the first batch of 39 barnacle-encrusted, one-kilogram bricks of suspected cocaine was seized near Magenta Beach, north of Sydney on Friday.
“Since then, 85 other packages of a similar size have been discovered along around 80 kilometres (50 miles) of the New South Wales coastline”, police continued.
Detective Chief Superintendent Jason Weinstein issued a statement urging people to report any suspicious packages.
“Detectives and specialist police are currently combing beaches and coastlines for any outstanding packages and working behind the scenes to make sure we find and hold accountable those responsible”, said Weinstein, the state’s crime command director.
