Beijing’s foreign ministry reported that a South Korean person had been executed for drug trafficking, marking the first occasion in over a decade that a citizen of that nation had received such a sentence.

According to the foreign ministry, a court in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou lawfully pronounced a verdict and executed the South Korean defendant for drug trafficking on Friday.

“When defendants of different nationalities commit crimes on Chinese territory, Chinese law shall be applied equally”, the statement continued.

An official from Seoul’s foreign ministry told media Friday that the death penalty was carried out today for a South Korean citizen who was sentenced to death for selling drugs in China.

Beijing stated that the individual, identified by Chinese officials as Jiang (Kang in Korean), had their legitimate rights and interests protected.

South Korea voiced regret that the death penalty was applied to one of its citizens.

“The government has made multiple requests for reconsideration or postponement of the execution on humanitarian grounds through various channels since the death sentence was announced”, the official stated.

China has executed a South Korean drug offender for the first time in nine years.

In 2014, the guy was apprehended in China with five kilogrammes of methamphetamine.

In 2019, he was sentenced to death.

China, the world’s leading executioner, routinely uses lethal injection to carry out the death penalty for extremely serious offences.

The Chinese legal system is tightly controlled by the ruling Communist Party, and criminal charges are almost always convicted.

China, like many other nations in the region, has strong drug regulations, and several foreign people have been sentenced to death for drug trafficking in recent years.

In China, an Australian was sentenced to death for narcotics trafficking in 2020.

In December 2013, he was caught at Guangzhou airport with more than 7.5 kilogrammes of methamphetamine in his luggage.

In 2019, China put to death two Canadian nationals guilty of drug trafficking at a time when relations with Ottawa were deteriorating.

The execution on Friday, according to Seoul, was unrelated to the relationship between China and South Korea.
