On Friday, China arrested an alleged CIA spy, a Chinese national who worked for a military-industrial business and was offered money and immigration to the U.S. in exchange for vital military intelligence.
According to reports, Zeng who was considered a classified person, was transferred to Italy to enhance his study and met a US embassy official while there.
Zeng was discovered to have signed an espionage agreement with the US and received training before returning to China to conduct espionage operations.
Zeng has been subjected to mandatory measures, but no further details were provided.
China has increased its scrutiny of what it considers espionage activities.
The state security ministry stated earlier this month that the country should encourage its citizens to participate in counter-espionage activities, including creating channels for individuals to report suspicious activity as well as commending and rewarding them.
According to the ministry, a framework that makes it normal for the general public to assist in counter-espionage must be implemented.
China passed an anti-espionage law last month that prohibits the transfer of any material relevant to national security and interests without defining such terms.
The new law upset the United States, while the European Union ambassador to China stated in May that he was unsure whether China’s economic opening was compatible with the counter-espionage law.
