Visiting Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a new military assistance package for Ukraine during his visit to Kyiv, according to a statement from Canada’s Prime Minister’s Office.
Leaders at the June G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada, initially committed a total of 2 billion Canadian dollars ($1.45 billion) in funding.
The aid will strengthen Ukraine’s defence capabilities amid the ongoing conflict and support Ukraine in procuring critical military equipment and supplies.
Canada will spend about 835 million CAD ($603 million) from the package to buy essential equipment for Ukraine. This includes armoured vehicles, medical supplies, spare parts, small arms, ammunition, explosives, and additional drone capabilities.
The funds will also support other urgently needed equipment and supplies to sustain Ukraine’s defence efforts.
Canada has earmarked another 680 million Canadian dollars ($491 million) to acquire military equipment from the United States. This component focuses on enhancing Ukraine’s air defence systems and providing other critical military support.
The remaining 220 million Canadian dollars ($159 million) will fund drones, counter-drone technology, and electronic warfare capabilities. This investment will include joint ventures between Ukrainian and Canadian defence industries, strengthening cooperation and innovation in military technology.
Support and Energy Partnerships in Focus for Ukraine
President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed Canada’s readiness to allocate $500 million under the Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List initiative to help Ukraine procure US weapons.
Zelensky also proposed that Canada join major energy projects in Ukraine, highlighting the country’s port infrastructure and storage capacities.
“Ukrainian storage facilities can be used for the supply of Canadian gas,” he said.
He further expressed hope that Canada could play an active role in implementing security guarantees for Ukraine, underscoring the strategic importance of international partnerships in sustaining Ukraine’s defence and energy resilience.
The announcement reinforces Canada’s commitment to Ukraine amid heightened global tensions and demonstrates growing Western support for Kyiv’s security and energy infrastructure.
Analysts note that the funding will not only provide immediate military relief but also enhance long-term defence cooperation between the two nations.
