Jair Bolsonaro, Brazil’s far-right ex-president was barred from running for office until 2030 for abuse of power after making false allegations about Brazil’s voting system ahead of last year’s election.

The seven justices of Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court in Brasilia voted unanimously to ban the former president for eight years.

This means that the right-wing populist will be unable to run for president in the next election.

According to the justices, Bolsonaro abused his position by summoning diplomats to his residence last year and making false statements about the country’s voting machines. The meeting took place just months before the election, which Bolsonaro narrowly lost.

Two justices agreed with Bolsonaro that he had the right to freely express himself.

Bolsonaro has stated that he will appeal the ruling.

The former president is still facing more than a dozen other cases, including one into his suspected involvement in the January 8 attacks on the capital’s government center by a mob of his followers.
