Awami League Accuses Yunus-Led Interim Government Of Silencing Media On Hasina

Bangladesh’s ruling Awami League on Saturday strongly criticised the interim government headed by Muhammad Yunus, accusing it of threatening the country’s media over the publication of statements by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The controversy stems from a government statement issued on Friday. It warned that broadcasting Hasina’s remarks in print, television, or online platforms would be unlawful.

Authorities cited her conviction for genocide and crimes against humanity, according to reports in local media.

The Awami League, in its statement, stated, “The illegal occupier, killer-fascist Yunus and his cohorts have immorally threatened the country’s media that action will be taken if they broadcast the speech of Awami League President and Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.”

“Under the leadership of killer-fascist Yunus, the constitutionally illegal interim government is establishing mob rule and fascism through injustice, lawlessness, and lack of accountability—pushing Bangladesh dangerously towards division. This crisis will be a burden on the people of Bangladesh for generations to come,” the party further added.

The Awami League raised concern over the use of International Criminal Tribunal (ICT) verdicts to justify restrictions on Hasina’s voice. It called the move ‘completely illegal’.

The statement argued that only an ‘occupier government’ would use such measures to stifle free expression. It further accused Yunus of manipulating state machinery to suppress the media.

“Killer-fascist Yunus and his associates are afflicted with schizophrenia. They have lost their sense of reason and judgment and have imposed a jungle rule in today’s Bangladesh. By brute force, they want to do everything, disregarding people’s opinion altogether,” the party declared.

It also accused the interim leadership of conspiring, both domestically and internationally, to falsely portray Hasina as a criminal.

The Awami League claimed that its leaders and activists were facing ‘extreme oppression and persecution’ simply for their political stance.

Reaffirming Hasina’s significance, the party said she remains the ideological leader of millions of Bangladeshis and a central figure in the nation’s politics.

“No conspiracy or mischief can erase this enduring political force,” it added.

Pledging to resist, the Awami League asserted that its supporters, along with the wider population, would oppose what it described as the ‘anti-national activities’ of the interim regime.
