PM Modi Expected To Flag Off Landmark Bairabi–Sairang Rail Line On 13 September

Aizawl is poised to join the rail map of India as Prime Minister Narendra Modi will likely inaugurate the 51.38 km Bairabi–Sairang railway project on 13 September, a senior official from the Mizoram Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) said on Saturday.

The project will make Aizawl the fourth capital city in the Northeast with direct rail connectivity.

Although the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) is yet to release a final confirmation, Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma, while addressing the 15th Conference of the Mizoram Police Service Association (MPSA), indicated that the Prime Minister is likely to flag off the project on the same day.

Officials from the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) said the Prime Minister will inaugurate the line linking Bairabi in Assam’s Hailakandi district to Sairang near Aizawl on 13 September, subject to PMO’s confirmation.

Chief Minister Lalduhoma had earlier invited the Prime Minister to inaugurate the newly completed railway line and the Sairang Railway Station during his meeting with him in New Delhi on 14 July.

Safety Clearance Granted

The project recently received clearance from the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), Sumeet Singhal, who inspected the newly laid track in June and authorised both passenger and goods train operations.

Built at a cost of Rs 8,215 crore, the Bairabi–Sairang railway line is likely to boost connectivity, improve trade, and accelerate socio-economic growth in Mizoram, fulfilling a decades-long aspiration of its people.

The NFR has executed an engineering marvel despite the challenging hilly terrain.

The line features 48 tunnels, 55 major bridges, and 87 minor bridges.

The tunnels stretch a combined 12,853 metres, while Bridge No 196 soars 104 metres high – 42 metres taller than Delhi’s Qutub Minar.

The project also incorporates five Road Over Bridges and six Road Under Bridges, underscoring its role as a vital infrastructure milestone for the region.
