As Temperatures Rise In China, ‘Facekinis’ Are Hottest New Trend

As temperatures soar, ‘facekinis’ are the trendy new fashion downtown in steamy Beijing. With the temperature climbing beyond 35 degrees Celsius and the surface temperature reaching as high as 80 degrees Celsius in some regions of the country, residents and visitors have taken to carrying portable fans and covering up to avoid getting a tan. Some hats even feature built-in fans.

Facekinis, or full face masks with holes for the wearer’s eyes and nose, sleeves to cover arms, and wide-brimmed hats and lightweight jackets made of UV-resistant fabric have all become fashionable.

“Compared to two or three years ago, before the pandemic, this year is much, much better than previous years. Sales volume is definitely up a lot this year”, remarked a salesperson.

Many East Asian females want fair skin, and sun protection creams are popular in neighboring countries.

“The main concern I have is potential skin diseases or developing sunspots”, stated 17-year-old student Li Xuyan, who wore masks that covered most of her face while visiting a tourist area in Beijing with her mother.

On Wednesday, Chinese state media showed tourists taking selfies next to a 12-meter-tall thermometer that indicated a real-time surface temperature of 80 degrees Celsius at the scenic Flaming Mountains in Xinjiang.
