Acknowledging Existing Initiatives

The summit also recognized the significance of ongoing international initiatives in the field of AI. It acknowledged efforts by the United Nations, UNESCO, the G7, and the G20, among others, in advancing global AI governance. “We acknowledge the importance of existing multilateral initiatives on AI, including the United Nations General Assembly Resolutions, the Global Digital Compact, the UNESCO Recommendation on Ethics of AI, and the African Union’s Continental AI Strategy,” the statement said.

Setting Priorities For The Future Of AI

The summit outlined several priorities for the future development of AI. These include promoting accessibility to AI, ensuring its ethical development, fostering innovation, and ensuring its sustainability. The statement emphasized the importance of creating an inclusive and transparent environment for AI, one that reduces digital divides and fosters economic growth without allowing for market concentration. It also stressed the need to shape AI in a way that positively impacts the future of work and labor markets while supporting sustainable development.

“We have affirmed the following main priorities: promoting AI accessibility to reduce digital divides; ensuring AI is open, inclusive, transparent, ethical, safe, secure, and trustworthy; making AI innovation thrive by enabling conditions for development and avoiding market concentration; and encouraging AI deployment that fosters sustainable growth,” the statement concluded.

Strengthening International Cooperation

The summit also reiterated the importance of international cooperation in AI governance. Leaders at the event agreed that collaborative efforts and coordination are vital to ensuring that AI development is beneficial for all countries and communities.

Prime Minister Modi, who co-chaired the summit with President Macron, is currently in France for a visit from February 10-12. Following the summit, Modi will travel to the United States for a meeting with President Donald Trump and senior U.S. officials on February 12-13.
