As the sacred Kalpvas is likely to conclude on Magh Purnima this Wednesday, Shipra Pathak, known as the ‘Water Woman’, shared her reflections on the deeper significance of the practice.
She emphasized that Kalpvas is not just a ritualistic bath but a transformative journey of sadhana (spiritual discipline), seva (selfless service), and samanvay (harmony).
Pathak, who is observing Kalpvas this year, explained, “Kalpvasis come here not only for their own virtue and salvation but also to assist fellow devotees. The discipline of Kalpvas requires one to sleep on the ground, teaching individuals to endure both winter’s chill and summer’s heat.”
Describing the spiritual essence of Kalpvas, she noted that the practice strengthens one’s ability to face life’s challenges with patience and resilience, offering a reminder that one must remain steady regardless of life’s ups and downs.
Shipra Pathak further highlighted the role of Hatha Yoga during Kalpvas in conditioning the body and aligning the mind to better handle life’s hurdles.
Drawing attention to the broader spiritual purpose of Maha Kumbh, Pathak stressed that true fulfillment is reached when individuals move beyond personal salvation to selflessly serve others.
In her efforts to make the Maha Kumbh a cleaner, more sustainable event, Pathak has made it a point to assist the camp’s priests, acharyas, storekeepers, and sanitation workers, even personally cooking meals with them.
She has also initiated the ‘Ek Thaila, Ek Thali’ campaign, distributing millions of eco-friendly items such as plates, bags, and glasses to promote environmental cleanliness.
In a bid to reduce plastic waste, Pathak handed over 500 reusable bags to Mother Dairy on Tuesday and encouraged local shopkeepers to use these bags, advocating for a collective effort towards making the Kumbh a polythene-free zone.
