Canada has welcomed India’s decision to restore some visa services in the nation beginning on Thursday, calling the move a good sign after an anxious time for many Canadians due to a diplomatic disagreement over the killing of a Sikh separatist.

On Wednesday, India’s high commission in Canada announced that authorities will resume processing various sorts of visa applications for Canadians applying from throughout the country as well as from abroad.

The decision comes a month after New Delhi suspended services in Canada and for Canadian citizens worldwide, as tensions between the two countries rose last month following Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s allegations of potential involvement of Indian agents in the June 18 killing of Khalistani extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia.

Nijjar was labeled a terrorist by India in 2020. Trudeau’s charges have been dismissed as absurd and motivated by India.

On Wednesday afternoon, Immigration Minister Marc Miller called India’s move “a good sign” following “an anxious time” for his country’s many Canadians.

“Our feeling is that a suspension should never have happened in the first place”, he continued.

India will resume services for entry visas, business visas, medical visas, and conference visas.
