Authorities reported Saturday that a gun attack in a pub in the western Mexican state of Jalisco, a region hard-hit by gang violence, killed at least six people.
In a statement, the Jalisco prosecutor’s office stated, “The incident occurred late Friday in the town of Teocaltiche amid celebrations for Mexico’s independence day”.
“Several people were shot in a Pub in the Maravillas neighborhood”, the statement reads.
After initially reporting four deaths, prosecutors verified six deaths on Saturday.
Jalisco has been rocked by violence tied to the Jalisco New Generation cartel, one of Mexico’s largest criminal groups.
Teocaltiche, located north of Jalisco, the capital of Guadalajara, was the site of another shooting earlier this month that killed two police officers.
Since the federal government launched a military-backed anti-drug assault in late 2006, more than 340,000 deaths and 100,000 disappearances have been recorded, the vast majority of which have been related to criminal organizations.
