5.5-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Syria, Residents On High Alert

On August 13, 2024, a 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck Syria, shaking several provinces. The quake hit 28 kilometers east of Hama, a central city, at 11:56 p.m. local time. According to the Syrian National Earthquake Centre, it occurred at a depth of 3.9 kilometers. This tremor followed a smaller quake earlier the same evening. At 9:30 p.m., a 3.7-magnitude earthquake was recorded, centered 21 kilometers east of Hama.

The recent earthquakes were felt across various Syrian regions. Fortunately, authorities have not reported any immediate casualties or significant damage. However, the state TV has advised residents to stay alert. They posted safety tips on social media, emphasizing the need for vigilance due to potential aftershocks.

Raed Ahmad, head of the Syrian National Earthquake Centre, commented on the situation. He told Sham FM, a pro-government radio station, that the tremors might be precursors to a stronger earthquake. This warning has led many residents in Hama and Damascus to stay outdoors, fearing further tremors.

The timing of these events is particularly concerning given the recent history. In 2023, a devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck northern and western Syria, causing extensive damage and loss of life. As a result, the current situation has heightened anxiety among the population.

In summary, Syria is on high alert following the recent earthquakes. Authorities and residents alike are bracing for possible aftershocks while hoping for a calm resolution to this seismic activity.
