A 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck several parts of Pakistan early Sunday morning, marking the second seismic event in less than 24 hours
According to the National Seismic Monitoring Centre (NSMC), the quake was felt in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and surrounding regions.
The NSMC reported that the earthquake’s epicentre was located 15 kilometres southeast of Rawat at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres.
The tremors began at approximately 12:10 AM, prompting residents to rush out of their homes in fear, many reciting the Kalima Tayyaba.
The quake triggered widespread panic, particularly in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, as well as nearby cities including Mardan, Murree, Haripur, Chakwal, Talagang, and Kallar Kahar.
Many residents stayed outdoors for hours, fearing potential aftershocks.
Just a day earlier, a 5.4-magnitude earthquake rattled parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, and the federal capital.
The NSMC confirmed that the epicentre of Saturday’s quake was in the Hindu Kush mountain range in Afghanistan, at a depth of 102 kilometres. Tremors from that quake extended into Afghanistan and Tajikistan.
Residents in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa felt the quake in Peshawar, Swat, Malakand, Nowshera, Charsadda, Karak, Dir, Mardan, Mohmand, Shangla, Hangu, Swabi, Haripur, and Abbottabad.
In Punjab, residents of Lahore, Attock, Taxila, Sialkot, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sheikhupura, Ferozwala, and Muridke also reported feeling the tremors.
Despite the widespread impact of both earthquakes, authorities have not reported any casualties or significant damage to infrastructure. Monitoring agencies continue to assess the situation and advise the public to remain alert.
