US President Donald Trump has proclaimed September 11 as Patriot Day, marking the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks that killed 2,977 people in New York, Virginia and Pennsylvania.

In a White House proclamation, Trump said a generation of Americans had grown up without a living memory of the attacks and called for the nation to renew its commitment to remembering those who lost their lives.

Trump said the passage of time should not diminish the significance of September 11, urging Americans to keep the memory alive across homes, schools and communities.

The proclamation recalled how hijackers seized four commercial aircraft on September 11, 2001. Two planes struck the World Trade Centre in New York, while another hit the Pentagon in Virginia. A fourth aircraft crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers confronted the hijackers.

Trump praised the 40 passengers and crew members aboard United Airlines Flight 93, including Todd Beamer, who helped lead efforts to regain control of the aircraft. He described their actions as a lasting symbol of American courage and resolve.

The President paid tribute to police officers, firefighters, emergency personnel, rescue workers and volunteers who responded to the attacks.

Nearly 100 emergency and first responder agencies took part in rescue and evacuation efforts in New York City, according to the proclamation.

Trump said the terrorists failed to break or divide the American people and honoured US military personnel who served in conflicts following the attacks. He further honoured those killed or injured in the aftermath and called for continued vigilance against threats.

Trump reaffirmed his ‘peace through strength’ policy and ordered US agencies to fly flags at half-staff for the 2,977 victims.
