The Elon Musk-owned company X is reportedly manually going through some users’ direct messages (DMs) in order to look into complaints of service abuse and infractions, “or to comply with laws or governmental requests.” This is a concerning trend.
The tech mogul failed to clearly respond to a question posed by an X user with a @kimdotcom account on Monday, which violates the platform’s policy of encrypting all content from beginning to end.

“It currently works in a clunky way for one to one messages (if you turn it on). We’re working on making it easy to use and apply to group messages too,” Musk replied.
“X audio and video calls are automatically encrypted,” he said, adding to his statement.
Concern was expressed by several users regarding X’s apparent manual DM screening process.
“Is it me or did Elon not understand the question of Kim? Kim was worried about reviewing the direct messages by government request,” an X user posted.
Another user commented: “You didn’t address the root on the concern. Why is X collaborating with governments to sift through our private DMs?”
