Tennis ball-sized hail that fell on cities and villages in Veneto, the region around Venice in the north-east of the country, caused at least 110 injuries, according to CNN. The damaging hailstorm occurred on Thursday.

10 centimeter-diameter hailstone

The hailstones were at least 10 centimeters in diameter, regional president Luca Zaia stated.

The Emergency Services answered more than 500 calls for help regarding injuries and property damage. The freak storm has led to broken windows in several houses. Plants and trees were severely damaged, and workers had to cut them down to clear roads.

Many people were injured after this

Zaia was quoted by CNN as saying, “The wave of bad weather, after having impacted our mountain regions, has now also hit the plains, causing injury to some people,” adding that the majority of injuries were brought on by broken glass and people stumbling on the hail.

According to Sky24, a 53-year-old man was killed while riding his bicycle during the storm when his wife, who was following him in their car, ran over him.

For 23 of the 27 major cities around the nation, red advisories for excessive temperatures have been issued. According to reports, the heatwave is causing hospitals to see an increase in patients.
Wildfires in southern Greece were rekindled by the heatwave, forcing more evacuations. Despite the fact that authorities had deemed the blaze to be under control overnight, firefighters lost control of it later that day as a result of the stronger winds. According to ANI, the fire has already devastated 35 miles of forests and scrubland.
