Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on Tuesday to explore avenues for strengthening trade relations and expanding the scope of bilateral cooperation.
During their meeting, the two leaders discussed ways to deepen economic engagement and diversify trade between the two countries.
“Held fruitful talks with President Lula, who has always been passionate about India-Brazil friendship. Our talks included ways to deepen trade ties and also diversify bilateral trade. We both agree that there is immense scope for such linkages to thrive in the coming times,” PM Modi posted on X, accompanied by images from the meeting.

“Clean energy, sustainable development and overcoming climate change were also prominent topics of discussion in our talks. Other areas where we will work even more closely include defence, security, AI and agriculture. India-Brazil cooperation in space, semiconductors and DPI will benefit our people,” the post added.

Earlier in the day, Brazil awarded PM Modi with its highest civilian honour – the Grand Collar of the National Order of the Southern Cross – as part of his ongoing State Visit.
This is the 26th international recognition PM Modi has received, and the third during his current five-nation diplomatic tour, which began on 2 July.
Continued recognition across the region
On Friday, Trinidad and Tobago conferred its highest civilian award – the Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago – making Prime Minister Modi the first foreign leader to receive the honour.
Prime Minister Kamala Persad Bissessar praised PM Modi’s leadership, strong ties with the diaspora, and efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic.
A day before that, Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama presented PM Modi with the Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana in Accra, acknowledging his statesmanship and global influence.
President Lula welcomed Prime Minister Modi at the Alvorada Palace in Brasília with full military honours and an escort of 114 horses, marking the start of the Brazilian leg of the tour.
Following the welcome, the two leaders held a restricted meeting, with broader talks at the delegation level scheduled afterwards.
A signing ceremony and press statements were planned to conclude the official engagements.
PM Modi has previously visited Brazil in 2014 and 2019 for BRICS summits, and in 2023 for the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro.
His current visit will likely revitalise the strategic partnership established between India and Brazil in 2006 and deepen cooperation across multiple sectors.
