Meet the real-life “Kumbhakaran”: a resident of Nagaur district in Rajasthan who sleeps between 20 and 25 days per month, or almost 300 days annually.
42-year-old Purkharam, has a rare disorder called Axis Hypersomnia that makes him sleep for extended periods of time.
His illness has reportedly had such a profound influence on his daily life since he received the diagnosis 23 years ago that his family members must feed and bathe him while he is nodding off.
Purkharam can only operate his grocery business five days a month. He occasionally dozes off during work.
According to the National Centre for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), 4 to 6 percent of people have hypersomnia, a complaint of excessive daytime sleep or tiredness, which has an impact on the patient’s daily life.
According to the report, it could reduce productivity and potentially cause workplace or driving accidents.
It could be brought on by sleep disorders like sleep apnea, obesity, drug or alcohol usage, depression, certain medications, a brain injury, or even a genetic reason.
Axis Studies show that variations in the brain protein known as TNF-alpha are the cause of hypersomnia.
Constant fatigue is the condition’s predominant symptom. Other symptoms include lack of energy, irritability, sleepiness, anxiety, restlessness, and loss of appetite.

Purkharam discovers bundles of newspapers outside his business after having slept for days on end, and after counting the papers, determines how many days he has slept.
Despite taking medication, Purkharam still experiences frequent bouts of extreme fatigue and headaches.
His family wishes for a speedy recovery and normal life for him.
