Bengaluru restaurant’s viral dosa-making video: 15 Million views spark controversy on tawa cleaning method with “Broom”

Dosas, a beloved South Indian delicacy, have taken the spotlight in a recent viral video from a Bangalore restaurant. The footage, shared by @Thefoodiebae on Facebook, unveils the meticulous process of crafting dosas from scratch, providing viewers with a behind-the-scenes look. However, the video has ignited a storm of reactions, leaving Facebook users divided.

In the video, a skilled cook takes center stage in the restaurant’s open kitchen, with eager customers in the background awaiting their orders. The preparation unfolds as the cook readies the tawa for dosa-making by spraying water and employing a broom for cleaning. The use of a broom has triggered criticism, but some commenters argue that it’s a specialized tool known as the “coconut broom” solely used for tawa cleaning.

The cook then deftly spreads dosa batter in circular motions on a generously sized tawa, capable of producing 12 dosas at once. A unique touch is revealed as the cook punctures a packet of ghee, expertly dispensing it over each dosa. Small portions of flavorful fillings and a generous layer of podi masala follow, creating a rich sensory experience.

The dosas are meticulously folded, transferred to banana-leaf-lined plates, and adorned with chutneys and sambhar before reaching the eager customers. The caption, “Crazy Rush for Most Hi-Tech Dosa of Bangalore,” adds to the intrigue.

The video has garnered a staggering 15 million views and 111K likes, prompting a diverse array of comments. Critiques include concerns over the perceived excessive use of ghee and the unconventional broom cleaning method. Some users express disappointment, labeling it the “Most hi-tech oily heart disease dosa,” while others defend the unique cleaning technique.

The debate highlights not only the intricacies of dosa preparation but also the subjective nature of culinary preferences. As users continue to share their opinions, the viral video provokes thought about the intersection of tradition, innovation, and public perception in the world of culinary arts.
