OpenAI rolled out a global age-prediction feature on ChatGPT to identify whether an account is likely owned by a minor.
The move comes as the artificial intelligence company prepares to allow adult content on the widely used chatbot.
In a statement, OpenAI said that when its age prediction model estimates an account may belong to someone under the age of 18, ChatGPT will automatically apply additional protections.
These safeguards limit exposure to sensitive or mature content and strengthen online safety for younger users.
According to OpenAI, the system works automatically and does not require users to declare their age upfront.
If a user is incorrectly classified as being under 18, they can regain full access by submitting a selfie through Persona, an identity verification service used by the company.
OpenAI said it will roll out the feature in the European Union in the coming weeks as part of its phased global deployment.
OpenAI’s head of applications, Fidji Simo, said in December that the company expects to launch an ‘adult mode’ on ChatGPT in the first quarter of 2026.
The move follows earlier remarks by chief executive Sam Altman, who confirmed that the company plans to allow mature content for users who verify their age.
ChatGPT currently has around 800 million weekly active users worldwide.
As part of its revenue expansion strategy, OpenAI last week announced that it would begin displaying advertisements on ChatGPT for some users in the United States.
With new monetisation features and adult content on the horizon, OpenAI said the age prediction system reflects its effort to balance platform growth with robust user safety, particularly for children and teenagers using the service.
