Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (HBCH&RC), Punjab, has launched a four-day workshop to strengthen molecular diagnostics and advance precision-based cancer treatment.
The Department of Oncopathology and Molecular Pathology is organising the first edition of Molecular Pathology Essentials (MPE 2026) from October 28 to 31.
Chandigarh Director of Health Services Dr Suman Singh inaugurated the programme as chief guest, with HBCH&RC Director Dr Ashish Gulia also attending.
Medical professionals from Punjab, Chandigarh, Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and other states are participating in the workshop.
Dr Ashish Gulia said, “Molecular pathology plays a crucial role in modern cancer treatment, as it helps doctors understand the genetic alterations responsible for cancer and select the most appropriate treatment for patients.”
He added that the programme would develop practical expertise, strengthen molecular pathology laboratories across North India and improve access to advanced diagnostic services.
The hospital will continue organising academic initiatives to support affordable, globally benchmarked cancer care closer to patients’ homes.
The hospital’s Oncopathology Department conducts more than 315,000 tests annually, covering histopathology, cytopathology, haematology, biochemistry, molecular pathology and cytogenetics.
Chandigarh Health Official Praises Hospital’s Efforts
Dr Suman Singh commended the hospital for combining quality medical treatment with financial and social support for patients.
She said, “The hospital ensures that patients receive not only better medical treatment but also financial and social support.”
She also stressed the importance of strengthening super-speciality courses and highlighted the Chandigarh Health Department’s collaboration with the hospital to screen people in remote areas for early cancer detection.
The workshop features laboratory sessions, expert lectures and interactive clinical discussions.
Participants will receive practical training in nucleic acid extraction, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), digital droplet PCR (ddPCR), Sanger sequencing and next-generation sequencing (NGS).
Sessions will also cover theoretical principles, quality control and interpretation of molecular test results to support accurate diagnosis and treatment decisions.
