Delhi Metro, often called the ‘lifeline’ of Delhiites, is in the news these days. However, it is now being discussed not for convenience, speed, or connectivity, but for conflicts between passengers.
Recently, disputes over watching videos on mobile phones at high volume have become common. These incidents raise a serious question: Has the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) failed to ensure a quiet and safe environment for passengers?
Announcements in the Delhi Metro and Indian Railways have long stated: ‘Please do not play music’. However, in today’s digital age, this guideline does not explicitly cover watching videos on mobile phones at high volume.
This oversight is causing problems. Passengers often watch videos without earphones, forcing nearby commuters to endure loud sounds. When asked to stop, these situations sometimes escalate into fights.
Passengers say that loud videos have become a recurring issue in the Metro. Several videos of fights have gone viral on social media, showing commuters clashing over mobile usage.
Acknowledging the problem, DMRC recently launched a campaign asking passengers not to ‘make reels’ or ‘play music at high volume’.
According to a DMRC official, “People watch content on mobile phones without earphones, which often contains obscene language or loud sound. This causes inconvenience to other passengers.”
DMRC has taken steps to raise awareness. Messages such as ‘STOP making reels’, ‘Don’t PLAY loud music’, and ‘PAUSE to let passengers deboard first’ are displayed at stations and on trains.
Additionally, DMRC has run social media campaigns and urged passengers to report issues immediately via helpline number 155370. However, these measures have not yet been fully effective.
Many passengers believe DMRC should introduce stricter rules, such as fines or temporary travel suspension for watching videos without earphones.
Recently, a video of a fight between two women over a seat in the Delhi Metro went viral. In the video, both women are seen pulling each other’s hair and slapping each other.
While this incident was about a seat, it reflects the growing tension among commuters. Such episodes not only threaten passenger safety but also damage the image of Delhi Metro.
Delhi Metro has set a benchmark in public transport in India. Yet, it now faces new challenges. Passenger fights and loud mobile videos cannot be ignored.
DMRC has initiated measures like priority frisking to help special-category passengers. However, it is equally important to maintain a calm and safe environment for general commuters.
DMRC should not rely solely on awareness campaigns but also implement strict rules and penalties. At the same time, passengers must respect others’ convenience. Only then can Delhi Metro truly provide a safe, civilised, and comfortable travel experience.
