Delhi NCR Welcomes Southwest Monsoon As IMD Forecasts More Rain

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has confirmed that the Southwest Monsoon has reached Delhi NCR, bringing an end to the prolonged spell of hot and humid weather.

Although widespread rainfall cooled the city, humidity levels continued to remain high, ranging from 61 to 95 per cent.

The monsoon arrived in the national capital on Thursday, five days after its normal onset date of 27 June. Rainfall affected several parts of Delhi-NCR throughout the day, offering much-needed relief from soaring temperatures.

The IMD has placed Delhi and adjoining areas under a yellow alert for Friday, predicting cloudy skies, moderate rainfall, thunderstorms and gusty winds.

Forecasters expect similar weather conditions on 4 July and have advised residents to prepare for intermittent rain over the coming days.

The showers reduced the day’s maximum temperature to 33 degrees Celsius, 4.4 degrees below the seasonal average.

The minimum temperature settled at 22.8 degrees Celsius, which was 5.1 degrees below normal.

More Rain Expected Across North India

The IMD has forecast additional rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms from Friday to Sunday, with temperatures likely to decline by another two to three degrees Celsius.

Daytime temperatures are expected to stay between 33 and 38 degrees Celsius until 8 July.

The weather agency also confirmed that the Southwest Monsoon has progressed across Delhi, most parts of Haryana and Punjab, the remaining areas of Uttar Pradesh, and further regions of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat.

Delhi experienced two days of heatwave conditions in late June before thunderstorms signalled the approaching monsoon. This year’s arrival came one day later than in 2025, when the monsoon reached the city on 28 June.

Historical IMD data show that the monsoon typically reaches Delhi between the last week of June and the first week of July, with 27 June recognised as the normal onset date.
