Delhi-NCR continued to struggle under severe heatwave conditions on Wednesday as soaring temperatures and dry winds disrupted daily life across the region.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned that the mercury in the national capital could rise to a dangerous 47 degrees Celsius on Thursday, with no immediate relief expected from the extreme weather.
In its latest weather bulletin, the IMD maintained a strong heatwave warning for Delhi and surrounding areas, stating that the intense conditions are likely to continue until May 26.
The IMD upgraded Delhi’s weather warning from yellow to orange on Wednesday as heatwave conditions worsened.
The department said temperatures could stay near 46 degrees Celsius over the next few days, with little change expected this week.
The IMD urged residents to take precautions against heat-related illnesses, especially children, elderly people and those with existing health conditions.
According to the IMD, a heatwave occurs when temperatures cross 40 degrees Celsius and remain at least 4.5 degrees above normal.
The department further noted that Delhi, along with Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh, is likely to witness severe heat throughout the week, accompanied by strong surface winds during afternoon and evening hours.
Uttar Pradesh’s Banda district recorded the country’s highest temperature at 48 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, highlighting the widespread impact of the ongoing heatwave across northern India.
Delhi’s air quality also remained in the ‘poor’ category on Thursday.
Several monitoring stations recorded elevated Air Quality Index levels, including Anand Vihar at 215, Wazirpur at 195, Rohini at 178, Ashok Vihar at 162 and IIT Delhi at 160, adding to residents’ discomfort amid the extreme weather conditions.
