The Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR) continues to reel under a severe cold wave, with residents facing bone-chilling temperatures for the fourth consecutive day.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for isolated parts of the region, warning of persistently low temperatures and dense fog.
Maximum temperatures are expected to remain between 21 and 23 degrees Celsius, while minimum temperatures are likely to hover between 3 and 5 degrees Celsius.
Delhi recorded a minimum of 3.8 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, significantly below the seasonal average, making this one of the coldest spells in recent years.
Air pollution continues to compound the harsh weather conditions, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) crossing the 350 mark in several areas, placing it in the ‘very poor’ to ‘severe’ categories.
Chandni Chowk recorded an AQI of 384, Ashok Vihar 376, Bawana 373, Punjabi Bagh 386, and Pusa 399.
Nehru Nagar’s AQI hit 397, falling into the ‘very severe’ bracket. Anand Vihar and Alipur reported AQI levels of 345 and 332, respectively.
In neighbouring cities, Noida and Ghaziabad also experienced hazardous air conditions.
Noida’s Sector-1 registered an AQI of 359, Sector-125 at 352, and Sector-116 at 347, while Ghaziabad recorded 312 in Sanjay Nagar and 282 in Indirapuram.
Even areas with slightly lower readings, such as Mathura Road at 259, remained in the poor category.
Health Advisory Issued for Residents
Authorities have urged residents to limit outdoor activity, especially for children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions.
Dense fog added to the challenges on Thursday, reducing visibility across the NCR and disrupting daily life.
Some areas experienced near-zero visibility conditions, causing caution on roads and delays in commuting.
Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) issued an advisory warning passengers of potential flight delays due to low visibility, with flights operating under CAT III conditions.
The IMD has advised residents to take precautions against cold wave conditions and maintain vigilance while travelling in dense fog.
Authorities continue to monitor weather and pollution levels closely, emphasising public safety as the region braces for harsher winter conditions.
