US-based tech giant Apple has sold approximately 6.5 million units of its iPhone 16 in India during the first 11 months of 2025, making it the country’s highest-selling smartphone, according to a recent report by Counterpoint Research.
The data indicates that Apple has outpaced its Android rivals in a market traditionally dominated by entry-level and mid-range devices.
Notably, the iPhone 15 also featured in the top five best-selling smartphones, highlighting Apple’s growing influence.
Counterpoint Research attributed Apple’s success to shifting consumer preferences, with more buyers willing to invest in high-end devices.
The report notes that this trend reflects a broader shift in India’s smartphone market, where premium smartphones are gaining traction over budget models.
Financing options, including no-cost EMIs, cashbacks, and bank schemes, have also made Apple devices more attainable to a wider audience.
Apple has boosted its performance in India by strategically expanding local manufacturing, reducing its dependence on China.
The company has begun assembling high-end Pro and Pro Max models in India for the first time.
In addition, Apple has opened three new retail stores in Bengaluru, Pune, and Noida, increasing its total store count in India to five.
The company’s India operations now account for a significant share of global production, with 12 per cent of Apple’s worldwide manufacturing value contributed by Indian factories.
Recent filings indicate that Apple shipped iPhones worth $2 billion from India in November 2025, while domestic sales reached a record $9 billion in FY25.
Remarkably, one in every five iPhones produced globally in FY25 was either manufactured or assembled in India.
Exports and Supply Chain Significance
Apple’s Indian manufacturing is not only supporting domestic sales but also contributing to global exports.
Apple now ships a growing share of iPhones sold in the Americas and other regions from India, highlighting the country’s strategic role in its international supply chain.
The Americas generated $178.4 billion in revenue in FY25, nearly 43 per cent of Apple’s global revenue, with Indian-manufactured iPhones playing a key role in fulfilling this demand.
Industry analysts suggest that Apple’s success in India will continue to grow as the company expands its retail footprint, enhances financing options, and strengthens local production.
The iPhone 16’s record-breaking performance marks a significant milestone for Apple, positioning India as a critical market for high-end smartphones and a key hub in its global manufacturing network.
