Google has rolled out Video Overviews for NotebookLM, its AI-powered research and learning tool designed to help users process and understand complex material.
Introduced at Google I/O earlier this year, the feature is now officially live. It presents content as narrated slides that include visuals, diagrams, quotes, and key data sourced from users’ notes or documents.
Video Overviews act as a visual complement to Audio Overviews, which Google released in 2023.
While Audio Overviews create podcast-style summaries, the new feature adds visual context, helping users better retain and comprehend information.
According to Google, this functionality is especially useful for complex concepts and academic content.
Users can tailor their Video Overviews by setting specific learning goals, defining their level of expertise, or choosing their intended audience.
For instance, a user might prompt NotebookLM with ‘I’m a beginner—explain the key visuals’, or ‘I work in biotech—focus on the advanced insights’.
This adaptability makes the tool suitable for students, researchers, and professionals alike.
Currently available in English, Google says more languages will be supported soon, broadening accessibility and making it easier for global users to learn in their preferred language.
Google also announced improvements to NotebookLM Studio, the platform’s workspace for organising AI-generated learning materials.
Users can now store and manage multiple outputs of the same type—such as Audio Overviews or Mind Maps—within a single notebook.
This enables users to generate content in various languages or formats, aimed at different chapters, subjects, or roles.
Another new addition is multitasking. The updated Studio panel allows users to perform several tasks simultaneously, such as listening to an Audio Overview while refining a Mind Map or reading a summary.
This streamlines the research and revision process, enhancing productivity and user engagement.
While Video Overviews are available now, the new Studio features will be gradually rolled out over the coming weeks.
Google continues to iterate on NotebookLM based on user feedback, reinforcing its position as a versatile, AI-driven research and thinking tool.
With these updates, Google reaffirms its commitment to simplifying learning through artificial intelligence, combining adaptive content generation with an intuitive user experience to make complex topics easier to grasp.
