Places of Worship Act

The Places of Worship Act 1991, introduced by the PV Narasimha Rao-led Congress government, aims to preserve the religious character of places of worship as they were on August 15, 1947.

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has filed a petition in the Supreme Court supporting the Places of Worship Act, 1991.

The Supreme Court heard petitions challenging the Places of Worship Act, 1991. A bench led by CJI Sanjiv Khanna barred lower courts from issuing orders or initiating new cases.

The much awaited verdict is here finally today. The Court maintains the Gyanvapi Mosque suit as maintainable saying it is also not Barred by Places of Worship Act.
