The Supreme Court, on Monday, declined to halt Hindu prayers in the southern cellar of the Gyanvapi mosque in Varanasi.

The Supreme Court will be hearing the plea of the Gyanvapi mosque committee challenging Allahabad High Court ruling on the viability of lawsuits aiming to "restore" a temple.

The Gyanvapi Mosque case has taken a new turn as the Muslim side has approached the Supreme Court after the Allahabad High Court upheld the District Court's order permitting prayers in the cellar within the mosque complex

After thoroughly examining the case records and considering arguments from all parties involved, the court found no grounds to intervene in the district judge's decision.

On January 31, the Varanasi district court granted permission for a priest to conduct prayers in the southern cellar of the Gyanvapi mosque.

The court directed to arrange for pooja to be performed by the Hindu side and a poojari to be appointed by the Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple Trust.

The survey's stay was prolonged when the mosque committee filed a motion with the top court on July 25.

The ASI team began the survey work at 7 a.m. in the Gyanvapi premises. During the survey, information about various aspects was gathered. On the second day of the survey, representatives from the Muslim side also participated.
