The seeds of the CAA can be traced back to the Nehru-Liaquat Pact of 1950, also known as the Delhi Pact, signed between Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Pakistani Prime Minister Liaquat Ali Khan.

Individuals who came to India on or before December 31, 2014, from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh who belong to Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi, or Christian communities, are eligible to apply for citizenship under the CAA.

The Citizenship law aims to grant citizenship to individuals belonging to Hindu, Jain, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist, and Parsi communities who migrated to India on or before December 31, 2014, from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan.

Prime Minister Modi will address the country shortly, the Citizenship Amendment Act regulations will also be released by evening today, as per sources.
