Mamata Banerjee Vows: “No Detention Camps in Bengal” in Fresh Assault on CAA

West Bengal’s Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, reiterated her opposition to the recently enacted Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), expressing her firm stance against the establishment of detention camps similar to those in Assam. She emphasized her disapproval of the CAA’s linkage with the National Register of Citizens (NRC), highlighting concerns about its potential implications.

Banerjee criticized the CAA as a “political gimmick” orchestrated ahead of the Lok Sabha election, denouncing its exclusionary nature that discriminates against Muslims. Under the law, persecuted non-Muslim migrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan are granted Indian nationality if they arrived in India before December 31, 2014.

Expressing solidarity with refugees, Banerjee assured that West Bengal would provide permanent settlement to all, emphasizing the state’s role as vigilant custodians rather than landlords. She condemned the BJP’s advocacy, accusing it of promoting a distorted interpretation of Hinduism that contradicts the teachings of the Vedas and Swami Vivekananda.
