Wriddhiman Saha To Retire After 2024-25 Ranji Trophy Season, Closing A 17-Year Cricket Journey

India’s wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha has announced that he will retire from cricket at the conclusion of the ongoing 2024-25 Ranji Trophy season, marking the end of a distinguished 17-year career.

Expressing gratitude for his cricketing journey, Saha posted on X, “After a cherished journey in cricket, this season will be my last. I’m honored to represent Bengal one final time, playing only in the Ranji Trophy before I retire. Let’s make this season one to remember!”

Saha’s Journey: From Wicketkeeper To Retirement & Challenges

The 39-year-old is currently preparing for Bengal’s upcoming fourth-round match against Karnataka in Bengaluru.

The wicketkeeper’s career has been notable, but not without its challenges.

Saha’s relationship with the Bengal cricket team soured in the 2022-23 season after a public disagreement with the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) secretary Debabrata Das, who accused him of making excuses to avoid matches.

Despite this fallout, Saha returned to the Bengal squad this season and played in the Ranji Trophy, demonstrating his commitment to the team.

Throughout his international career, Saha played 40 Test matches, amassing 1,353 runs that include three centuries and six half-centuries.

He has been a significant figure in Indian cricket, though the rise of Rishabh Pant made his place in the national team increasingly competitive.

Saha last donned the Indian jersey in December 2021 and was released from the Central Contracts in 2023.

In the Indian Premier League (IPL), Saha has been a consistent presence since its inception in 2008, playing for teams including:

  • The Sunrisers Hyderabad,
  • Chennai Super Kings,
  • Kolkata Knight Riders, and
  • Punjab Kings

His notable performances include a remarkable innings in the 2014 IPL final, where he scored 115 not out, helping Punjab Kings to the runner-up position.

However, ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, the Gujarat Titans decided not to retain him, ending his long-standing association with the league.

As Saha prepares for his final season, he leaves behind a legacy as one of the most respected wicketkeepers in Indian cricket, with many fans eager to see how he concludes his journey on the field.
