Since Article 370 was repealed on August 5, 2019, J&K has seen a remarkable transition in the sports world, with young athletes exhibiting their potential and grit in national and international competitions.
The new J&K Sports Policy, 2022, which includes awards for sports excellence, special cash prizes for winners of international championships, and yearly recruiting of exceptional athletes, was approved by the Jammu and Kashmir government in February of last year.
By incorporating all parties and fostering inter-departmental synergies for the composite growth of sports, the policy aims to attain excellence. The fundamental tenets of the policy are to “scout” for talent and “catch them young,” “engage” for grassroots inclusive participation in sports and games, “facilitate” for infrastructure, facilities, know-how, and training in sports, and “recognize” for recognizing contributions and accomplishments through awards and new employment.
The third Khelo India Winter Games were held at Gulmarg in February, and the UT hosted them there. The UT maintained its dominance in winter sports by taking first place with a total of 26 gold medals. During the five-day competition, it also won 25 silver medals and 25 bronze medals.
In the previous four years, J&K has sent five cricketers to the IPL: Abdul Masad, Umran Malik, Voranth Sharma, Avinash Singh, and Yudvir Singh.

A number of cricketers from the Valley attended the Skill Specific Camp for women players hosted by the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA). Women’s cricket has gained significant popularity, and the inaugural Women’s Premier League (WPL) was a success, which has increased the motivation of aspirants from remote regions like Kulgam and Shopian.
Along with sports, the Narendra Modi administration’s largest-ever recruitment push has benefited young people in J&K. For a number of positions, accelerated recruitment committees have been established. 29,813 persons in total were hired, while 5,523 job openings were forwarded to agencies. 11,811 people were placed in jobs after receiving approval under the Himayat plan for 1,05,639 applicants.
