Smriti Mandhana Becomes Fastest Woman To 5000 ODI Runs

Indian opener Smriti Mandhana created history on Sunday, becoming the youngest and fastest woman to reach 5000 runs in Women’s ODI cricket.

The landmark came during the Women’s World Cup match against Australia at the Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam.

The 29-year-old left-hander reached the milestone in her 112th ODI match, surpassing Stafanie Taylor of the West Indies, who had achieved 5000 runs in 129 matches.

Mandhana achieved the milestone with a six off Kim Garth in the 21st over. She scored a quick 80 runs off 66 balls, hitting nine boundaries and three sixes.

After starting cautiously, she accelerated after reaching her fifty off 46 balls, demonstrating her ability to switch gears effortlessly.

Fastest to 5000 Runs in Women’s ODI

According to ESPNCricinfo, the updated list of fastest players to 5000 ODI runs now places Mandhana at the top, followed by Stafanie Taylor (129 matches), Suzie Bates of New Zealand (136), Mithali Raj of India (144), and Charlotte Edwards of England (156).

Her feat underlines her consistency, skill, and dominance in international cricket.

Mandhana has been in prolific form this season, accumulating 974 runs in the calendar year, the highest by any player.

Although her World Cup began with modest scores of 54 runs in the first three matches, she compensated with an outstanding performance on Sunday, continuing her strong record against Australia.

Earlier this year, Mandhana scored 300 runs in a three-match ODI series against Australia, including two centuries, further demonstrating her dominance against a top-ranked opponent.

Her recent performances affirm her status as a pivotal player for the Indian women’s cricket team.

As Mandhana continues to break records, she remains a key figure in India’s pursuit of World Cup glory.

Her milestone achievement not only cements her place in cricketing history but also inspires a new generation of young women cricketers to aim for excellence on the international stage.
