The Press Information Bureau (PIB) has dismissed circulating social media claims suggesting that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is preparing to introduce a new ₹5000 currency note.
The clarification comes amid a surge in online posts and forwarded messages alleging that the central bank is set to unveil the high-denomination note.
In a public advisory issued on Monday, PIB’s fact-check unit confirmed that the claim is entirely false. The agency stated that the RBI has not announced, approved, or discussed any such decision.
According to the government’s communication, the RBI has not initiated any process to introduce a ₹5000 note. Officials emphasised that rumours of this nature often create confusion, prompting unnecessary speculation among the public.
The clarification serves as a reminder for citizens to verify financial or regulatory claims through authenticated channels rather than relying on unverified social media posts.
The government has repeatedly highlighted the growing spread of misinformation on digital platforms, especially concerning economic and financial matters. To counter this, PIB’s fact-check team routinely examines viral messages and flags misleading content.
In its latest update, PIB urged users to refer exclusively to the official RBI website for accurate and updated information on Indian currency, monetary policy, and regulatory developments. The advisory reaffirms that the RBI’s web portal remains the primary source for any formal announcements.
The spread of forged claims regarding currency denominations is not new. Experts note that misleading financial information can trigger unnecessary panic, confusion in markets, or misinterpretation of government policy. The current clarification aims to prevent such misconceptions from gaining traction.
Authorities have appealed to the public to stay vigilant and avoid sharing unverified posts. Government agencies continue to encourage responsible digital behaviour, especially at a time when misinformation can spread rapidly across multiple platforms.
