Amit Shah Pays Tribute To Dharmendra, Describing His Passing As A Profound Loss To Indian Cinema

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has paid a heartfelt tribute to legendary Bollywood actor Dharmendra, who passed away on Monday at the age of 89 at his Mumbai residence.

In a message shared on X, Shah reflected on the actor’s extraordinary influence on Indian cinema, noting that his performances captivated audiences across six decades.

Shah highlighted Dharmendra’s journey from a modest background to becoming one of the most admired figures in the film industry.

He remarked that the actor created a permanent place for himself in the hearts of millions through his charisma and ability to breathe life into every character he portrayed.

The Home Minister described his passing as a profound and irreplaceable loss, adding that Dharmendra’s work would continue to resonate with audiences for generations. Shah also extended his prayers for the late actor’s soul and offered strength to his family and fans during their time of grief.

A Period of Ill Health Before the Final Farewell

The celebrated actor, fondly known as the ‘He-Man’ of Indian cinema, had been unwell for several months.

On November 10, he was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai after a deterioration in his health. Prominent actors, including Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan and Govinda, visited the hospital, expressing solidarity with the Deol family.

The family opted for home-based care and discharged Dharmendra two days later.

Dharmendra leaves behind a large family comprising his first wife, Prakash Kaur, his second wife and actress Hema Malini, and six children, Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Vijeta, Ajeita, Esha and Ahana.

With a filmography spanning classics such as Sholay, Chupke Chupke, Dharamveer, Seeta Aur Geeta, Jugnu, and Loafer, Dharmendra shaped multiple eras of Hindi cinema. His final appearance was in the 2024 film Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya, where he portrayed Shahid Kapoor’s grandfather.

Even in the final years of his life, Dharmendra remained committed to his craft, admired for his discipline, warmth and evergreen on-screen presence. His legacy as an icon of romance, action and reinvention will continue to inspire future generations.

Indians will forever remember Dharmendra’s life and work as a cornerstone of the nation’s cinematic history.
