Jannik Sinner made history on Sunday by claiming his first Wimbledon crown, defeating defending champion Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in a pulsating final on Centre Court.
With this triumph, the 23-year-old becomes the first Italian man to win the prestigious men’s singles title at The Championships.
The victory came just five weeks after Sinner suffered a painful defeat to Alcaraz in the Roland Garros final, where he missed three championship points.
This time, Sinner flipped the script with poise and power, ending Alcaraz’s perfect 5-0 record in major finals and snapping a five-match losing streak against the Spaniard.
In a match lasting just over three hours, Sinner brought his A-game, dictating play with aggressive groundstrokes and precise serving.
After losing the first set, he found early breaks in the next three, gradually wearing down Alcaraz’s defences. His relentless targeting of the Spaniard’s forehand forced errors at key moments.
Sunday’s win gives Sinner his fourth Grand Slam title, adding to his growing legacy. Only Roland Garros now eludes him in his pursuit of a career Grand Slam. He also extends his lead atop the PIF ATP Rankings, now 3,430 points ahead of his rivals.
The road to the final tested Sinner both physically and mentally.
He breezed through the early rounds, dropping very few games. However, he faced a scare in the fourth round when Grigor Dimitrov retired with a pectoral injury while leading two sets to love.
Sinner bounced back to beat Ben Shelton in the quarters and Novak Djokovic in the semis.
Sinner sealed victory on his first match point, raising his arms as Centre Court erupted.
Alcaraz, who was aiming to become only the second man after Nadal to win Roland Garros and Wimbledon in the same year, fell short despite a strong season.
Their budding rivalry now stands finely poised, with both men having split the past seven majors, a sign of many more battles to come.
With youth, skill, and mental resilience on display, Sinner’s Wimbledon win signals a new chapter in men’s tennis.
As Italy celebrates a new champion, the stage is set for an era-defining rivalry with Alcaraz at the sport’s pinnacle.
