India captain Rohit Sharma continued his streak of bad luck at the toss, suffering his 12th consecutive defeat during the Champions Trophy final against New Zealand at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday.
This unwanted milestone puts Rohit on par with West Indies legend Brian Lara, who experienced a similar string of toss losses between October 1998 and May 1999.
Meanwhile, Netherlands’ Peter Borren follows closely behind, having endured 11 consecutive toss defeats from March 2011 to August 2013.
For the Indian team, this marks the 15th consecutive occasion they have ended up on the losing side of the coin flip.
Rohit’s unfortunate streak started in the 2023 ODI World Cup final against Australia in Ahmedabad, a match that India eventually lost by six wickets.
In the final, New Zealand won the toss and opted to bat first but suffered a setback with the absence of star pacer Matt Henry.
The tournament’s leading wicket-taker, with 10 dismissals to his name, suffered a right shoulder injury while attempting a catch in the semi-final against South Africa.
With Henry unable to recover in time, New Zealand drafted in right-arm pacer Nathan Smith as his replacement.
India are eyeing their third Champions Trophy title, while New Zealand are looking to lift the trophy for the second time since their maiden victory in 2000.
India have remained unbeaten in the tournament so far, while New Zealand’s only loss came against India in Dubai on 2 March.
