Sunrisers Hyderabad’s playoff ambitions came to a heartbreaking end on Monday night as persistent rain forced the abandonment of their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 clash against Delhi Capitals at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.
Having won the toss, Sunrisers skipper Pat Cummins opted to bowl first and delivered a stellar performance with the new ball.
He struck immediately with a Test-quality delivery that found Karun Nair’s edge, setting the tone for a devastating opening spell.
The Australian pace spearhead then dismissed Faf du Plessis, adjusting his length astutely to outfox the veteran.
Not long after, Abishek Porel handed Cummins his third wicket, edging tamely to Ishan Kishan.
Kishan, standing in as wicketkeeper for Heinrich Klaasen, would finish with four sharp catches a first in IPL history involving a keeper dismissing all top four batters.

The young batter struck a composed 41 off 28 balls, including two clean sixes off Zeeshan Ansari, lifting Delhi to a competitive total of 133 for 7 from their 20 overs.

However, just as Sunrisers were preparing to chase a modest target, rain began to fall. What started as a drizzle quickly intensified, waterlogging the outfield.
Despite the ground staff’s best efforts, including the use of multiple super-soppers, the conditions remained unplayable.
Eventually, the umpires were forced to abandon the match, leaving both teams with a point each. But the outcome proved disastrous for Sunrisers Hyderabad, who were officially knocked out of playoff contention.
They now join Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals on the sidelines.
Final Verdict
It was a bitter pill to swallow for Pat Cummins and his men, particularly after a commanding bowling performance.
