Sunrisers Hyderabad captain Pat Cummins delivered a masterclass in pace bowling on Tuesday, spearheading a ruthless attack that dismantled Delhi Capitals for a modest 133/7 in Match 56 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.
Opting to bowl first, Cummins wasted no time in stamping his authority. He removed Karun Nair with the very first delivery of the match a classic Test-style ball that seamed away and took the edge, safely pouched by Ishan Kishan, who kept wickets in place of Heinrich Klaasen.
Powerplay Chaos: Three Down In No Time
The Australian fast bowler further continued to torment the visitors, removing Faf du Plessis and Abhishek Porel in a fiery opening spell.
Du Plessis misread Cummins’ shortened length, edging a bottom-handed swipe to Kishan, while Porel fell to a delivery that stopped in the pitch, resulting in a leading edge – Kishan again completing the catch with a sprint towards square-leg.
With three top-order wickets further gone and just six runs on the board, Delhi found themselves in deep trouble inside the first three overs.
Exceptional Fielding Adds To DC’s Misery
Cummins continued to dominate proceedings, this time contributing in the field. Axar Patel fell to a slower ball from Harshal Patel, slicing it high into the air.
Cummins, stationed at mid-off, backpedalled and completed a spectacular one-handed catch.
Jaydev Unadkat then joined the party, straightening one from around the wicket to take the edge of Rahul Tewatia, with Kishan collecting his fourth catch a first in IPL history where a single wicketkeeper accounted for the entire top four dismissals.
At 29 for 5, DC’s innings appeared beyond salvage. However, Tristan Stubbs and debutant Vipraj Nigam attempted to stabilise the innings, adding 33 runs for the sixth wicket.
Their stand, however, ended in comic fashion as a miscommunication led to both players stranded at the keeper’s end. Vipraj sacrificed his wicket to let Stubbs continue.
Ashutosh Sharma’s Counter-Attack Lifts Total
Impact Player Ashutosh Sharma provided the only spark for Delhi, hammering a brisk 41 off 28 balls. He struck two towering sixes off Zeeshan Ansari and peppered the boundary with aggressive intent, lifting Delhi past the 130-mark.
Stubbs, despite hanging around, never fully adjusted to the tricky surface, finishing with 41 runs as well, but at a laboured pace.
Cummins Shines With Ball And Leadership
Cummins further ended with figures of 3 for 19, setting the tone early and rallying his team in the field with sharp leadership and athleticism. His efforts ensured that SRH were left with a manageable chase on a pacer-friendly surface.
