Rahul Dravid, the outgoing head coach of Team India, has once again set an example of equity and fairness by declining an additional bonus offered by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
The decision was aime at aligning his reward with that of the support staff, reflecting his commitment to team unity and equality in recognition.
Following India’s triumphant victory in the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup, where they clinched the title with a thrilling win over South Africa, the BCCI announced a substantial cash prize of Rs 125 crore for the squad.
As per the initial distribution plan, each player in the winning squad was to receive Rs 5 crore, while support staff members such as Vikram Rathour, T Dilip, and Paras Mhambrey were to get Rs 2.5 crore each.
However, according to a report in the Hindustan Times, Rahul Dravid opted not to accept an additional Rs 2.5 crore bonus, preferring instead to receive the same amount as his fellow support staff members.
“Rahul wanted the same bonus money (Rs 2.5 crore) as the rest of his support staff (bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, fielding coach T Dilip, and batting coach Vikram Rathore). We respect his sentiments,” a source from the BCCI shared with the newspaper.
This decision underscores Dravid’s consistent stance on fair distribution of rewards within the team.
Notably, during his tenure as the head coach of India’s victorious U-19 World Cup team in 2018, Dravid advocated for equal rewards for all team members, including support staff and players.
Initially, the remuneration structure for the U-19 team had proposed a lower reward for support staff compared to Dravid.
However, he insisted on revising the allocation to ensure parity, prompting the BCCI to adjust the percentages and ensure that everyone involved in the success received equitable recognition.
Dravid’s principled stance reflects his belief in team spirit and fairness, setting a benchmark for leadership and unity in Indian cricket.
His actions have not only been admired within the cricketing fraternity but also resonate widely as a testament to integrity and inclusivity in sports.
