Shreyas Iyer, leading the Punjab Kings, won the toss and chose to bowl first against Lucknow Super Giants at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. The fixture is vital for Punjab as they attempt to keep their playoff hopes alive.
Punjab brought back Marco Jansen and Vijaykumar Vyshak to reinforce their bowling unit.
On the other side, captain Rishabh Pant confirmed that Arjun Tendulkar would make his debut. The team also included Arshin Kulkarni and Mohammed Shami, with Mitchell Marsh unavailable.
Punjab approached the match after a six-game winless streak but still retained a slim mathematical chance of qualifying. They must secure a win in this match, improve their net run rate beyond Kolkata Knight Riders, and depend on Rajasthan Royals losing to Mumbai Indians.
Earlier this season, Punjab registered a comprehensive 54-run win over Lucknow in New Chandigarh.
After the toss, Iyer described the match as a decisive moment and said the players are keen to rise to the occasion. He mentioned that although the team has not previously faced such a situation, the squad is motivated and ready.
Pant stated that his side would also have opted to bowl first, adding that the pitch is favourable for batting and may result in a high-scoring game. He admitted that the season has been difficult but pointed out that it has provided important learning experiences.
Pant also expressed regret to the fans for the team’s performance and assured that the players would put in their best effort.
