Last month, Australia defeated India at the storied Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad to win an unprecedented sixth ODI World Cup. However, a photo taken after Australia’s victory in the World Cup caused quite a stir on social media, with fans venting their frustration at Mitchell Marsh, the star of Australia.
Many Indian fans thought it was disrespectful for Marsh to be seen in the photo with his feet resting on top of the World Cup trophy. Indeed, Mohammed Shami, who finished the World Cup with the most wickets (24 in 7 games), claimed that Marsh’s gesture during the festivities had “hurt” him.
After the incident more than two weeks ago, Marsh has finally spoken out about the photo. The all-rounder told Australia’s SEN that he didn’t mean any offense with the gesture.
“There was obviously no disrespect meant in that photo at all. I haven’t given it too much thought, I haven’t seen a lot on social media even though everyone tells me it’s gone off. There’s nothing in that”.

Although Marsh didn’t mean any offense, an activist group leader in Uttar Pradesh actually reported the all-rounder to the police last week for the gesture. Pandit Keshav Dev, the president of the Bhrashtachar Virodhi Sena, filed the complaint at the Delhi Gate Police Station in Aligarh on Tuesday.
