Indian Premier League 2026 saw a distressing moment when Lungi Ngidi, playing for Delhi Capitals, sustained a serious head injury during their match against Punjab Kings at Arun Jaitley Stadium.
Officials carried him off the field on a stretcher and rushed him away in an ambulance.
The incident unfolded in the third over when Priyansh Arya attempted to lift a delivery from Axar Patel over the infield.
Ngidi tracked back to attempt the catch but misread the ball’s path and lost his footing. He fell awkwardly and struck the back of his head on the ground.
Ngidi lay on the ground in clear discomfort, prompting immediate concern across the field. Medical staff, including the team physio and doctor, quickly attended to him.
As the situation appeared serious, they brought a stretcher onto the field while the crowd watched in silence.
Teammates David Miller and Tristan Stubbs showed visible concern following the incident. Delhi Capitals coach Hemang Badani signalled to the medical team to secure Ngidi with a neck brace.
The tension escalated further when an ambulance entered the ground, with players and staff surrounding the injured bowler.
Although Ngidi communicated with medical staff using hand gestures, he could not move his head or neck. The medical team carefully fitted a neck brace and secured him onto the stretcher.
Ricky Ponting, representing Punjab Kings, walked onto the field to check on him.
They then transported the South African pacer to Max Hospital for detailed medical examination and treatment.
Following the incident, officials introduced Vipraj Nigam as a concussion substitute in place of Ngidi. After a delay of around 15 minutes, play resumed, with hopes that the pacer recovers fully from the injury.
