New Delhi, Aug 2: Jay Shah has been elected unopposed as the next Independent Chair of the International Cricket Council (ICC). He will take over from Greg Barclay in December. Shah, currently the Honorary Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Chair of the Asian Cricket Council, was the sole nominee for the chairmanship. Barclay decided not to seek a third term.
Shah Plans to Expand Cricket’s Global Reach
Shah aims to enhance cricket’s global presence, especially with its inclusion in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. “I am humbled by the nomination as Chair of the ICC,” Shah said. He is committed to working with the ICC team and member nations to globalize cricket. Shah plans to balance various formats, adopt advanced technologies, and introduce marquee events to new markets. He views the Olympics as a crucial growth opportunity. Shah, turning 36 next month, emphasized the need for fresh ideas and innovation. His election marks a new chapter for the ICC. He will be the fifth Indian to hold a major role at the council. N. Srinivasan (2014-15) and Shashank Manohar (2016-2020) were previous ICC Chairmen, while Jagmohan Dalmiya (1997-2000) and Sharad Pawar (2010-2012) served as Presidents.
