India wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan set a new national record by becoming the country’s highest run-scorer in T20 Internationals in a calendar year during the fifth and final match against New Zealand at Seddon Park in Hamilton on Sunday.
Kishan scored 61 off 32 deliveries, helping India post 191/8. His innings took his 2026 tally to 1,220 runs from 37 innings, surpassing former captain Suryakumar Yadav’s previous record of 1,164 runs in 31 innings in 2022.
Before the match, Kishan had accumulated 1,159 runs and needed six more to overtake Suryakumar. He achieved the milestone early in his innings.
With 1,220 runs, Kishan now ranks second among batters from full-member nations for the most T20I runs in a calendar year.
Overall, he stands fourth on the list, behind Austria’s Karanbir Singh (1,488), Pakistan’s Mohammad Rizwan (1,326) and Bahrain’s Fiaz Ahmed (1,251).
Kishan also completed 2,000 runs in T20 Internationals during the innings. He reached the landmark in 1,345 deliveries, becoming the third-fastest Indian to achieve it by balls faced.
Abhishek Sharma holds the national record, having taken 1,024 balls, while Suryakumar reached the milestone in 1,164 deliveries.
Kishan had endured a difficult start to the series, scoring one and zero in the first and fourth matches he played. A low-grade right adductor strain kept him out of the second and third T20Is.
He needed 45 runs to complete 2,000 T20I runs before the final match. His impressive half-century helped him achieve both personal milestones in Hamilton.
