The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the suspension of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 for a period of one week, effective immediately.
This decision comes in light of the escalating border tensions between India and Pakistan.
After thoroughly evaluating the situation, the BCCI will reveal the revised schedule and venues for the remaining matches.
In an official statement, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia assured that they will disclose further updates regarding the tournament’s schedule and venues after consulting relevant authorities and stakeholders.
The decision to pause the tournament made following the intensifying cross-border tensions that began on Thursday night.
Air strikes and drone activity from Pakistan led to widespread blackouts in regions including Jammu, Udhampur, and Pathankot.
The situation forced the cancellation of the IPL match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala, just after 10.1 overs of the first innings.
As the region’s airports were shut down for safety reasons, both teams, along with match officials, commentators, and IPL-related personnel, were swiftly evacuated.
On Friday morning, the group transported by bus to Jalandhar, where a special train is now en route to New Delhi.
The IPL Governing Council, led by Secretary Saikia and IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal, decided to suspend the IPL.
The Board consulted with franchisees, broadcasters, sponsors, and fans, many of whom had expressed concerns about the safety of the players and other stakeholders.

Saikia emphasised that while the BCCI has full confidence in the preparedness of India’s armed forces, the decision made in the collective interest of all involved.
He reaffirmed the Board’s unwavering support for the Government of India and the armed forces, particularly in light of Operation Sindoor, which has been launched in response to recent terrorist attacks and Pakistani aggression.
Saikia also noted that while people in India deeply cherish cricket, the safety, security, and sovereignty of the nation remain paramount.
“There is nothing greater than the nation,” he added, reaffirming the BCCI’s commitment to act in the best interest of the country during these challenging times.
The Board also saluted the bravery and sacrifices of India’s armed forces, whose heroic efforts are providing both protection and inspiration to the nation during this critical period.
So far, IPL 2025 has completed 58 matches, with 12 league-stage games and the playoffs still remaining.
The suspension raises questions about whether an alternate window will be available for the remaining matches and where the games might take place.
The BCCI has communicated the suspension to all ten IPL franchises, who are now making arrangements for the safe departure of all involved personnel.
The BCCI expressed gratitude to its key stakeholders, including official broadcaster JioStar, title sponsor TATA, and all associate partners for their understanding and continued support in prioritising national interest over all other concerns.
BCCI Secretary Saikia concluded the statement by thanking the stakeholders for their cooperation and reaffirming the Board’s commitment to the safety and well-being of the nation.
