The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the suspension of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 for a period of one week, effective immediately.
This decision comes in light of the escalating border tensions between India and Pakistan.
The BCCI stated that the revised schedule and venues for the remaining matches will be revealed after a thorough evaluation of the situation.
In an official statement, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia assured that further updates regarding the tournament’s schedule and venues would be disclosed after consulting relevant authorities and stakeholders.
Suspension Follows Intense Border Clashes
The decision to pause the tournament was made following the intensifying cross-border tensions that began on Thursday night.
Air strikes and drone activity from Pakistan led to widespread blackouts in regions including Jammu, Udhampur, and Pathankot.
The situation forced the cancellation of the IPL match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala, just after 10.1 overs of the first innings.
As the region’s airports were shut down for safety reasons, both teams, along with match officials, commentators, and IPL-related personnel, were swiftly evacuated. On Friday morning, the group was transported by bus to Jalandhar, where a special train is now en route to New Delhi.
BCCI Consults Stakeholders And Stands With The Nation
The BCCI’s decision to suspend the IPL was taken by the IPL Governing Council, led by Secretary Saikia and IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal.
The Board consulted with franchisees, broadcasters, sponsors, and fans, many of whom had expressed concerns about the safety of the players and other stakeholders.

Saikia emphasised that while the BCCI has full confidence in the preparedness of India’s armed forces, the decision was made in the collective interest of all involved.
He reaffirmed the Board’s unwavering support for the Government of India and the armed forces, particularly in light of Operation Sindoor, which has been launched in response to recent terrorist attacks and Pakistani aggression.
Cricket Takes A Backseat Amid National Crisis
Saikia also noted that while cricket is a deeply cherished passion in India, the safety, security, and sovereignty of the nation remain paramount.
“There is nothing greater than the nation,” he added, reaffirming the BCCI’s commitment to act in the best interest of the country during these challenging times.
The Board also saluted the bravery and sacrifices of India’s armed forces, whose heroic efforts are providing both protection and inspiration to the nation during this critical period.
Impact On The IPL Schedule And Future Plans
At present, IPL 2025 has completed 58 matches, with 12 games remaining in the league stage and the playoffs still to be played.
The suspension leaves questions regarding whether an alternate window for the remaining matches will be available and where the games might be held.
The BCCI has communicated the suspension to all ten IPL franchises, who are now making arrangements for the safe departure of all involved personnel.
Support From Key Stakeholders
The BCCI expressed gratitude to its key stakeholders, including official broadcaster JioStar, title sponsor TATA, and all associate partners for their understanding and continued support in prioritising national interest over all other concerns.
BCCI Secretary Saikia concluded the statement by thanking the stakeholders for their cooperation and reaffirming the Board’s commitment to the safety and well-being of the nation.
