Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Nitish Kumar on Thursday as the senior JD(U) leader took oath as the Chief Minister of Bihar for a record tenth time.
The ceremony, held at the iconic Gandhi Maidan in Patna, marked a significant political moment in the state’s history.
PM Modi described Nitish Kumar as an ‘experienced administrator’ who has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to governance and development.
Nitish Kumar was sworn in by Governor Arif Mohammad Khan in the presence of senior leaders, party workers, and thousands of citizens who had gathered to witness the event.
His swearing-in marks yet another chapter in a political journey that began when he first became Chief Minister in 2000—a tenure that lasted only seven days.
Since 2005, Nitish Kumar has returned to power repeatedly, earning a reputation as one of the longest-serving Chief Ministers in India.
Prime Minister Modi attended Nitish Kumar’s oath ceremony for the first time, even though the Bihar leader has taken the oath five times since PM Modi became Prime Minister in 2014.
Nitish Kumar has served under both the NDA and the Grand Alliance during this period, navigating shifting alliances while retaining his central position in state governance.
PM Modi Extends Congratulations
After the ceremony, PM Modi posted on X, “Congratulations to Shri Nitish Kumar Ji on taking oath as Bihar’s Chief Minister. He is an experienced administrator with a proven track record of good governance for many years. My best wishes to him for his tenure ahead.”

PM Modi arrived at Patna Airport shortly before 11 AM and flew directly to Gandhi Maidan by helicopter to attend the event.
Deputy Chief Ministers Assume Charge
Following Nitish Kumar, Samrat Choudhary—an MLA from Tarapur—was sworn in and has now taken charge as one of Bihar’s Deputy Chief Ministers.
Vijay Sinha took the oath soon after and has also assumed office as Deputy Chief Minister.
A number of ministers took the oath alongside the Chief Minister, including Vijay Kumar Choudhary, Mangal Pandey, Dilip Jaiswal, Shravan Kumar, and Bijendra Yadav.
Their inclusion signals the formation of a broad-based cabinet intended to ensure continuity, administrative stability, and renewed developmental focus.
The ceremony concluded with Prime Minister Modi congratulating all newly sworn-in ministers.
With Nitish Kumar beginning his tenth term, he sets Bihar on a new path of governance driven by long experience, strong political partnerships, and a renewed emphasis on stability and development.
